產品 QR Code 到底該「證明」什麼?What a product QR code should actually prove
Almost every product now carries a QR code, yet most of them prove nothing at all. A QR code worth a consumer's trust should answer three questions: is this genuine, where did it come from, and is its current status sound? This article explains the difference that matters — and the criteria to use when judging any traceability solution.
A marketing QR code proves nothing
Most QR codes on products simply encode a fixed web address. Scanning one opens a campaign page, a video, or a social account. The problem is that the address is public, static, and infinitely copyable. Anyone can photograph that QR code — or pull a product image off the internet — print an identical code, and stick it on anything. The page it points to is the same for every unit and every scan. In other words, it can tell you what the brand wants to say, but not whether the item in your hand is real.
For a manufacturer, a code like this caps out at marketing exposure. It cannot support anti-counterfeiting, cannot distinguish batches, and cannot help you scope a problem when one occurs. As consumers grow used to the gesture of "scan to verify," a QR code that cannot actually prove authenticity erodes trust rather than building it — because a counterfeiter can apply a code that looks exactly the same.
Three things a trustworthy code should answer
The difference becomes clear once you separate "printing a QR code" from "giving a product a verifiable identity." A genuinely useful product QR code should let whoever scans it do three things:
Verify authenticity — confirm the item really was made by the company that claims it, rather than just landing on a link anyone could have copied.
See origin and story — view where the product came from, its ingredients or materials, manufacturing details, and whatever the brand chooses to disclose openly.
Check live status — confirm whether the item is currently in good standing, expired, or part of a recall — instead of a static page that never changes.
These three answers share one trait: none of them can be baked into the QR code itself. Each must be returned live, at the moment of the scan, by a trusted server. That is the fundamental dividing line between a marketing code and a traceability code.
The key difference: static link vs. server-verified identity
What makes a code trustworthy is not how complicated it looks, but the model behind it. A static QR code puts all the information inside the code — the code is the answer, which is exactly why it can be copied without limit. A trustworthy product code works the other way around: the code carries only an identity, while the real answer lives on a server and must be looked up on every scan.
The crucial part is that this identity is ideally unique to each individual unit. When every item carries its own one-of-a-kind identifier, the server has something to reason about: was this identity formally issued by the genuine maker? What batch and status does it map to? Those judgments happen server-side and cannot be forged by copying a picture. You do not need to know the internals of any anti-counterfeit mechanism to grasp the point — trust comes from an answer delivered live by a trusted source, not from an answer printed on a label for anyone to re-photograph.
This is also why the industry is moving toward open standards such as GS1 Digital Link to carry product identity: they let an identifier live inside an ordinary web address in a standard, parseable structure that different systems can read, while leaving the act of verification to the server rather than to an image that can be re-photographed.
How to judge a solution when choosing one
When someone pitches you an "anti-counterfeit QR code" or a "traceability solution," test it with concrete questions rather than marketing vocabulary. The table below contrasts "just printing codes" with "actually verifiable," as a checklist to hold a solution against:
| 判斷面向What to examine | 只是行銷碼Marketing code only | 可信的溯源碼Trustworthy traceability code |
|---|---|---|
Each unit has a unique identifier |
Baked into the code, copyable | 由伺服器即時回應驗證Returned and verified live by a server |
Always the same static page | 可反映正常/過期/召回Reflects good / expired / recalled |
| 採用的標準Standard it uses | 廠商私有格式或純網址Proprietary format or plain URL | 開放標準,跨系統可解讀Open standard, readable across systems |
It is also worth clarifying the boundary: what does the solution let you do, and what responsibilities remain yours? Obtaining valid identifier licensing, keeping product data accurate, and confirming content and timing in any regulatory context — such as TFDA-related filings — do not disappear just because you switch platforms. An honest solution draws that line clearly instead of papering over it with vague "fully compliant" language.
How Animfy thinks about this
Animfy is a traceability platform for Taiwan manufacturers, built on the GS1 Digital Link standard. We believe the value of a product QR code lies not in how nicely it prints, but in whether it can actually prove something — letting consumers verify authenticity, see origin, and confirm status. If you are rethinking what the QR code on your own product should be doing, we are happy to walk through it with one of your real products, so you can see for yourself the difference between "verifiable" and "just a printed code."
