Traceability

Two-way traceability: what one-up, one-down really means

Traceability sounds like one long chain running from raw material all the way to the shelf. In practice, every factory only has to get two things right: know who you received from, and know who you shipped to. That is the principle the industry calls one-up, one-down — and it is the smallest building block of any traceability system that actually works.

The core idea of one-up, one-down

One up means your immediate upstream: who you received your raw materials, ingredients, or packaging from. One down means your immediate downstream: who you shipped your finished goods to. The key word is immediate. You are not expected to record every link in the entire supply chain — you are responsible only for the party directly above you and the party directly below you.

When every member of a chain handles its own one-up and one-down, those fragments interlock like puzzle pieces: your downstream is someone's upstream, and your upstream is someone else's downstream. No single company needs the full picture, yet the whole chain can be reconstructed link by link when it matters. That is the elegance of the principle — it breaks a huge problem into a local responsibility that everyone can actually meet.

Mapping upstream receipt to downstream shipment

What makes traceability genuinely workable is not just recording receipts and shipments separately, but linking the two. That is: this batch of finished product was made from which incoming batches of raw material? That link is forged inside your own production or processing step — when raw materials of different lot numbers are consumed into one manufacturing batch, then split into several finished lots for shipment.

If that mapping is never captured, all you have are two separate piles: a stack of receiving records and a stack of shipping records, with no way to answer the question that actually matters — which supplier's material went into this problem product. Real traceability depends on the internal link "receipt → manufacturing batch → shipment" being properly established.

Why regulators expect this

In many regulated sectors — food, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other safety-critical products — authorities widely require operators to trace one step up and one step down. In Taiwan, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has long promoted traceability and tracking systems for food businesses, and the spirit of those requirements is exactly this one-up, one-down logic: you must be able to show where your inputs came from, and where your products went.

Regulators do not ask for this merely as paperwork. The real purpose is that when a public-safety incident occurs, the affected scope can be pinned down quickly and precisely — neither missing a batch that should be pulled, nor dragging innocent product into the net. Having one-up, one-down capability is the baseline way you prove to inspectors, to downstream customers, and ultimately to consumers that you have control over your own product.

Backward and forward recall: both directions must work

The value of two-way traceability shows most clearly when something actually goes wrong. The same set of up-and-down records must support two investigations that run in opposite directions:

If you can only look up but not down, you find the cause but cannot pull the product back. If you can only look down but not up, you recall a lot of goods without knowing where the fault lies, and you cannot stop the next batch from going wrong. Only when both directions work does a recall become fast and precise — instead of the brand-damaging, cost-heavy fallback of pulling everything just to be safe.

What data to capture at each link

One-up, one-down usually fails not because nothing was recorded, but because too little was recorded, or the records do not pair up. The table below summarizes the core fields worth capturing at receipt, production, and shipment — and these are exactly the kinds of information that international standards (such as GS1 application identifiers for batch or lot, production date, and serial number, and the SSCC used to identify logistics units) are designed to carry.

Why it matters
Supplier identity, receipt date, product or ingredient code, raw-material batch or lot, quantity received, related certificates or test documents This is the starting point for tracing the cause upward; without a lot number, backward tracing breaks at the very first step
Manufacturing batch number, which raw-material lots were consumed, production date, resulting finished lots and quantities This is the link that joins up to down; without it, the two ends cannot be paired
下游出貨Downstream shipment 客戶或收貨方身分、出貨日期、成品代碼與批號、出貨數量、物流單位識別(如 SSCC)Customer or consignee identity, shipment date, finished-product code and lot, quantity shipped, logistics-unit identifier (such as an SSCC) 這是「往下找受影響產品」的依據,決定召回能不能精準框出範圍This is the basis for tracing affected product downward, and it determines whether a recall can be scoped precisely

Record these fields with consistent coding — especially using standardized identifiers for products, lots, and logistics units — and you no longer merely have records; you have traceability data that can be queried quickly and reconciled against each other, whether in a drill or a real event. When you evaluate a traceability platform, rather than asking what flashy features it has, first confirm that it faithfully carries this minimal one-up, one-down data and lets queries run cleanly in both directions.

Animfy is built on the GS1 Digital Link standard and focuses on making this one-up, one-down foundation both standards-aligned and practical for the way Taiwan manufacturers actually work. We are less interested in flash than in whether, on the day something goes wrong, you can describe the affected scope quickly and precisely.
